Iliria

“A magical union of European talent from Italy, Portugal and Galicia. ILIRIA is born from Shakespeare’s imagination, but comes to life in the movements, voices and humor of Elefante Elegante Teatro. The play hooks us from the beginning, with its visual beauty and movements.” Marcial Blanco in www.manicomicos.org (12/03/08, V Festival Manicomicos, A Coruña)

On the island of Illyria, Duke Orsino is dying of love for Olivia, but despite the romantic Portuguese songs he dedicates to her, his love is not reciprocated. At the same time, two twins, Violeta and Sebastian, are shipwrecked off the coast of the Island. Violeta is forced to disguise herself as a man in her brother’s clothes in order to survive in this foreign country. But Sebastian is also saved, and unaware of each other’s happy fate, they both end up in the most amusing case of mistaken identity.
ILIRIA is a theatre, music, movement and acrobatics show based on the play “Twelfth Night” by William Shakespeare. It is intended for ages 12 and up. The text merges with dance, mime and acrobatics in aerial fabrics, creating a visual and poetic background where the comic plot of the piece unfolds. The music has a fundamental presence and accompanies the dynamic course of the action. ILIRIA deals with Male and Female identity questioning who we are and what we appear to be. The characters get lost in a web of personality changes that leads them to question their own identity. ILIRIA is about the ease with which we love and stop loving.
